Life Legacy

Elinor Steiger died Friday after 93 glorious years. It all started May 3, 1919 in North Brookfield, MA, older sister to Richard, children of John and Gladys Krusell.

Mom was a woman well ahead of the times. After graduating from high school, she completed an associate secretarial degree from Baypath Jr. College in Springfield, MA. This country girl took a job with the government in Washington DC. She married her high school sweetheart, John, while in DC.

After John returned from WW II, Mom made their home in Springfield, raising 3 children: Ann, Jack and Tom. She was a working Mom in a day when it was not the "norm", unlike today. She was an executive secretary at Titflex. In the 60's she followed John to San Antonio, TX with Tom in tow, the other "chicks had already fled the nest". She eventually settled as an executive administrator with Southwest Research Institute, retiring in the mid 80's.

Mom and John would take the pickup truck with the camper shell to the Texas coast. More than once, Mom would drive off by herself. In her 70's and 80's, after John passed, Mom took many cruise around the world. She even parasailed on one trip, over 80 years old. She volunteered at the Rainbow Senior Center in Boerne, TX and loved to make recycled greeting cards. Mom also loved to cut out newspaper articles she thought would interest her children and grand children.

We all have fond memories of Mom gathering the family over the years for 4 reunions: Maine, Florida, Texas and Virginia. Mom was a strong, unique and independent woman who will be missed by her family and friends. She now resides in heaven and in our hearts.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Steiger.

Survivors include her daughter Ann Champigny of Indian Orchard, MA, and her children, David and Lisa of Torrington CT, Brian and daughter Sarah of Ludlow MA, John and Crystal with children Tyler, Nadiya and Maylee of Granby MA, Cheri and Jim with son Brett of North Haven CT; her son John R. Steiger and wife Janice of Orrington, ME and their children, Carmen and Jay with children Kyle and Haley of Orington ME, Brent and Tricia with children Zach and Olivia of Brewer ME; and her son Thomas J. Steiger and wife Glenda of New Braunfels and their children, Tammy of Fair Oaks TX, Justin of Austin TX, Alissa and Hector with daughters Ayden and namesake Elinor of College Station TX. Also surviving are a brother, Richard A. Krusell and wife Mary of Cazenovia, NY; 3 nieces, Peggy Gelnaw of NJ, Karen Krusell of MA, and Kathy McChandles of SC; and their neighbors and good friends Jency and Bill Nichols.
