Mary Nell Weiss-Holt Long

    March 5, 1931  -  April 1, 2012

Life Legacy

Mary Nell Weiss-Holt-Long lived her life with joy, love and a deep and abiding faith in God, and her family and friends were richly blessed by the time she spent with us.

Mary passed away on Palm Sunday, April 1, 2012, a few weeks after her 81st birthday. She was born March 5, 1931, in San Antonio to Fred P. and Zulia (Harding) Weiss.

With her family, she grew up attending Government Hill Lutheran Church, where she was confirmed. She graduated in 1949 from Brackenridge High School, where she belonged to the Purple Jackets.

She attended San Antonio College for 2 years, taking business courses, and also worked for City Public Service after high school.

Mary met Dick Holt on a blind date set up by her dear friend Marlene. They continued dating and soon fell in love. Mary and Dick were married in 1952. They moved to Corpus Christi and lived in the Robert Driscoll Hotel, where Dick was the resident manager.

Their daughter, Karen, was born in 1954. The Holts moved back to San Antonio in 1955. Their son, Keith, was born in 1962.

Mary was a devoted mother. She played an active role in her children’s lives, volunteering as Karen’s Girl Scout leader, Keith’s Cub Scout leader, and as a school “room mother” for both.

Her enjoyment of children led naturally to her career as a teacher’s aide in the North East Independent School District from 1972 to 1996, when she retired.

Her husband, Dick, died in 1984 after 32 years of marriage, and Mary channeled her energy into being a comfort and a friend to Karen and Keith.

In 1990, she began dating Bill Long. Bill and Mary were married in 1992 and Mary left her longtime home to share her life with Bill in his home in Harmony Hills.

Bill and Mary traveled extensively. They also enjoyed their time spent at home, working many hours together on their landscape and backyard vegetable garden.

After Bill died in 2010, Mary expressed deep gratitude that they had been given 20 years of shared love and friendship. Mary was a longtime member of Concordia Lutheran Church, where she attended worship from 1965 until her death. She had taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school at Concordia.

She moved to Adante Independent Living in San Antonio in 2011 and quickly made many friends there. She lived at Adante until her passing.

Mary is survived by Karen, of San Antonio; Keith and his wife, Tara, and twin grandchildren Thomas and Alexis, all of Fort Worth; her sister, Frances Rodriguez; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, her extended family through her marriage to Bill and many very dear friends. In addition to her husbands, Dick and Bill, Mary was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Margaret Ferrie and Helen Dorn; a brother, Dr. Fred H. Weiss; and three brothers-in-law.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 5th from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Porter Loring on McCullough.
