Life Legacy

Chris Madrid went to be with his Savior on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the age of 61.

Chris was born in Los Angeles, California to Raul B. and Beatriz Portillo Madrid on October 12, 1950. He was preceded in death by his father, Raul B. Madrid, and long-time friend, Billy Berchelmann.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 33 years, Carolyn Barnette Madrid; his children Lisa Madrid Waller, and husband Bryce, and Michael Cameron Madrid; his mother, Beatriz Portillo Madrid; his brother, Carlos Madrid; his sister, Diana Madrid, and husband Duane Hilburn; and niece, Elena Berkowitz. He was also the hero of his two grandsons, Liam Christopher and Michael Ryan Waller.

Chris was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, received a degree in marketing from The University of Texas at Austin, and returned to his hometown of San Antonio in 1977 to open what would become one of the city’s favorite restaurants, Chris Madrid’s.

Chris Madrid loved life. He loved people. He was a man of integrity and a man of faith.

He loved to laugh and to not let the sun go down on his anger.

He loved the beaches of Port Aransas and traveling with his family.

His community will remember him as a warm and generous man. His family will remember him as a caring son and brother, a loving husband and father and the greatest Papo his grandkids will ever know.
