Life Legacy


James Peter Nelis died on December 3, 2011 after his courageous battle with Agent Orange from the Viet Nam Conflict.

He was born in Turtle Creek, PA, on July 22, 1947, to James and Janet Nelis. He was a graduate of Gateway High School in Monroeville, PA. He received his BA from New Mexico Highland University. He served two years in the U.S. Army and was in the Viet Nam Conflict. He was awarded numerous medals for serving his country. During his career he worked for Johnsonville Sausage Co., Farmland Industries, and Time Warner.

He is survived by his best friend and wife of 39 years, Colleen (Johnson); his sister Helen (Bunny) Hoover (Duane) of Dayton, Pa. He was uncle to Dr. Charles J. Brandenburg, Shayne Brandenburg and Craig Hoover, Tom Johnson, Kimberly Kirkby, Terri Lunsford, Stacey Visby, Shannon Johnson, Blaine Bowers, Sara Johnson and Ryan D’Anza. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Sarah Johnson; brothers-in-law, Shawn and Tim (Linda) Johnson; sisters-in-law, Mary Kyle (Jerry) Schumpp, Teresa (Nathan) Martinez and Melissa Bowers, and numerous other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his dog, Miss Priss.

The family would like to thank the staff of Innovative Senior Care by Brookdale and Parklane West.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 7, from 2:00-8:00 P.M. at Porter Loring Mortuary North. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Raton, NM, at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Innovative Senior Care Hospice.
