Life Legacy

Margie Kathryn Bohl Irwin was born on January 22, 1932 in Devine, Texas and passed away on October 30, 2011 in San Antonio.

Margie was born and raised on the family farm east of Devine and was the fourth of six children born to Alex and Dora Bohl. Upon starting school, her scholastic abilities soon became apparent and she was always on the “A” honor roll from 1st grade through graduation. She also excelled in sports, playing volleyball and softball and was a member of the Devine area championship team in softball. She was popular in the Devine schools, church, and community and was drum major, cheerleader, and homecoming queen. She completed her education in Devine as high school Valedictorian of the class of 1949.

After high school, she moved to San Antonio where she and her sister Adilene were a part of the Legion of Mary at St. Ann’s parish. Margie continued her education at business school in San Antonio. Then, she met her future husband, Gerald Peter “Pete” Irwin and began a journey that lasted over 59 years. Margie and Pete were married in 1952 and their family grew to include three sons and two daughters. In spite of her full time duties raising a family of five, Margie continued her higher education in Wichita Falls, Corpus Christi, and San Antonio.

In 1970, she graduated Summa Cum Laude from St. Mary’s University with a B.A. degree in English/History and continued her studies with a Masters in Guidance and Counseling in 1979 from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Her career in education spanned 37 years and her creativity and energy were instrumental in the development and implementation of the Gifted and Talented Programs for Northside I.S.D. in San Antonio. Margie was the principal designer and administrator of the Northside Gifted and Talented Programs until her retirement in 1996. Her students and fellow educators serve as a profound legacy for her work during that time.

After her official retirement, she continued to work in education as a supervisor of student teachers for Illinois State University, Winona State University, and other out-of-state universities. In this capacity, she supervised the placement of student teachers and frequently, these teachers continued to work in the San Antonio area. Margie was always integrally involved in the lives of her family and friends and enjoyed many activities including gardening, fishing, and traveling.

She is survived by sisters, Laura Maney, Adilene Bohl, and Betty Ebrom and husband, Charles; sons, Chris Irwin and wife, Roxanne; Peter Irwin and wife, Laura; Pat Irwin and wife, Kelly; daughters, Mary Wilson and husband, Cam; Gina Jarman and husband, Bill and numerous other loving family members and friends.
