Memories of my uncle are with me from the time I can remember. Over the years I have known him from a distance in miles but close in heart. I have known him as a man who had a deep love for his family and his country. He was charismatic from the time he was a child. I remember my mom, Mary, telling about Jack bringing a group of friends home to see some nonexistent green chickens under his bed. He was always a leader and this continued throughout his military career. He loved his sister, Mary, and this love was felt by me and my family as well. He met his great-nephew, Carter, through his weekly phone calls to Mary. He learned of Carter's fondness for firetrucks and Carter became the owner of several firetrucks, books, and even a fireman suit. The weekly phone calls is something that will be greatly missed. I first visited him in his home as an adult with a family of my own. We were treated like royalty. We were introduced to family, friends, and shown the sights of San Antonio. We were invited to come back which we have done as often as we can. He was proud of his Greek heritage and a master chef when it came to Greek salad and lamb. Whatever his challenge he would face it head on. This was demonstrated in the way he faced blindness and with his final battle over the last six months. This very special person will be missed by his family in Iowa very much.

The first time my son Carter met Uncle Jack he was a little over two years old. Carter was being a normal two year old stinker when Jack bellowed at him in his military voice a command to make him behave followed by a pointed finger and a "You hear me BOY?". Carter replied by turning around and with the same pointed finger, and military voice but with a big smile on his face shouted right back "You hear me BOY?" Ever since Uncle Jack knew he met his match and from that moment on they had a very special bond. Carter and Uncle Jack developed a telephone relationship with the weekly calls to Nana Mary and they became very close. Uncle Jack after learning of Carters love for fire trucks sent him every fire truck imaginable, even one Carter could drive. Carter got to meet Jack again when he was about 6, we went to San Antonio so my husband Bill could go Wild Boar hunting. In Jacks usual way he went all out to help Bill arrange the hunting trip of a life, as well as welcoming us all into his home and making us feel at home. The only thing Jack and Eloise expected from us was to accept their generosity and allow them to treat us like royalty. I will always be thankful to have the memories I have bringing my family to see Jack before he was ill. I am so glad that Carter was able to have such a special relationship with him and even though he is only 9 years old, I know that he will remember Uncle Jack the rest of his life as fondly as the first time he yelled "You here me Boy?" right back to him.

I had the chance to go down and visit and stay with Jack and Eloise this March 2005. It was great to see them after so many years. Jack got along very well and was so proud of all the computers and accessories he had gotten from the service to aid in his blindness. They opened their hearts and home to me and a friend Deb Werkmen who made the trip with me. I guess the most memoriable experience I had with Uncle Jack was the year his nephew and I got married December 1977. Uncle Jack and his brother Emanual from South Carolina were making the trip to Iowa for our wedding. Come to find out Emanuel had called Jack to see what flight he was coming in on so they could meet in Des Moines and come up together. Well Emanual just wanted to know what flight so he could get an earlier one so he could get here first and get the extra bedroom. Uncle Jack had to sleep on the couch. Their sister Mary told so many stories on them two and after knowing them I'm sure they were true. Uncle Jack had a heart as big as the state he lived in. Glad I got to spend time with him as he will be missed greatly by all who loved and knew him. Loved by Gary and Becky Krause
