I wish to express my deepest sorrow for the lost of Micheal. We spent many days talking about fishing in Alaska. He always expressed an interest in fishing with me in Alaska. As I reflect on our relationship I remember working with him on several issues prior to my retirement from USAA. I know he will be missed. John 14:1-4

Dear Pam & Sons, Heaven must have been short on very capable angels to have summoned Michael so early. The innumerable times we worked on IMCO projects demonstrated his wonderful gifts of expression, understanding, analysis and negotiation. He built many bridges across problems at USAA that others, less talented, could not. He always had other things on his plate but whenever I needed him he was most gracious in helping me over my hurdles. As a long time USAA member as well as a 10 year IMCO employee knowing Michael was there meant all was well at USAA. God Bless & keep you as we will in our prayers. Mark & Carole

I am so sorry for your loss. I only met Mr. Wagner once, but just from reading the things other people have written about him, I know he must have been a great man. Matt, I know this must be a really hard time for you, things like this aren't supposed to happen to good people. You are all in my thoughts and prayers. Morgan, SMH Class of 2001

We were so sorry to hear about Mike. I worked with him at USAA and thought the world of him. I always went to him when I had a legal matter because I knew that I would get an accurate answer. He will be sorely missed.

Pam, I worked with Mike for many years at USAA. I was always impressed with his calm manner and how "un-attorney like" he seemed. He was always upbeat and looked for the positive in life. I will remember him always and he definitely made a difference in this world. What a man of character and integrity; what a great example for all of us.

To the Wagner Family, I have worked with Mike numerous times in the last 20+ years. My memories of him will always be fond. There was little doubt that Mike "knew his stuff", but he also was caring in the way he helped others - a rare quality of a truly fine man. USAA is a better place because he was here.

09/11/2002 -

Sid Fikes

Dear Pam, Just a note to express my deepest sympathy to both you and your children. Mike and I go almost back to the stone age including TCU, Phi Delta Theta, and USAA. I can say nothing that is of comfort to your aching heart. I will say that I am proud of our friendship and proud of all of Mike's many accomplishments. You and your children will be in our prayers.

Kathy Prados Sayles

Mrs. Wagner and Sons - During my 11-1/2 years of working in the Bank Legal Department of USAA FSB, I have known Mr. Wagner. I will always remember that anytime I saw Mr. Wagner, in the pedway, at the main building, he always stopped to tell me hello and ask how I was doing. I always enjoyed having Mr. Wagner come by the office to visit with my boss because he always had a smile on his face and kind words. I will always remember him. My deepest and sincerest condolences to you and your family. Kathy Prados Sayles

I just wanted to let you know that I heard right away about Mike. He was such a nice friend in the past and was always a good neighbor. I am really going to miss him a lot. Pam, you and your sons had reason to be proud of Mike, he was a wonderful husband and father. I just wish I was going to be in town to attend the funeral but will be Orlando instead. I will be thinking of you all and my prays will be with you. I am going to make a donation to Davidson College in Mike's name. Again, I wish to extend how sorry I am about your loss. If I can do anything for you and your sons, please let me know. Regards; Scott Radke

To the Family of Mike Wagner -- My heart goes out to each of you. I have always felt very blessed to have known and worked with Mike. He had a truly unique personality. Mike was a highly respected officer of USAA, and a great inspiration to many who had the opportunity to work with him. He was truly a gentleman, and is now a gentle angel. Bob & Brenda Dimas

Mike, although I never knew you personally, my wife Brenda had the pleasure to work as a legal secretary in the General Counsel for the Life Co. if even for just a short time. She had nothing but good things to say about you and your acts of kindness. I too,as anyone could see how great a shape you we're always in. God only knows why things like this happen to good people such as yourself. Thank you for your kindness towards my wife during a difficult time and my sincere condolences to your wife and family R.I.P..:

Bruce Petersen

Pam, Matthew & Michael, I am terribly saddened to have lost Mike as a friend and colleague at such a young age, as I know you are at a much deeper level as well. I am blessed to have known him, however, in my 16 years at USAA. He was always pleasant to work with and downright fun to be around. We shared not only a love for USAA but a passion for fishing. I will never forget one particular fishing trip we took to Cedar Bayou out of Rockport. We fished all night and early the next morning, stopping only for a few hours of sleep in a broken down hammock in the blowing sand. Even though we got lost, got stuck and caught nothing, it did not matter. We had a lot of fun in the attempt! Mike loved to fish, loved his Whaler, and loved the entertainment value in the whole process. I know also, that like me, he loved to fish and enjoy the water with his son's, Michael and Matthew. I can only hope there is fishing in heaven! Mike has been a positive impact in my life and I will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Pam, the boys and your family. Sincerely, Bruce Petersen

09/11/2002 -

Phyllis Tuttle Lobit

Pam, my sincere condolences to you and your family. I worked for Mr. Wagner about 20 years ago and he was absolutely the most respectful man I have ever known. His humor and wit made for many smiles in General Counsel. I will miss seeing him walk the hallways of USAA. God bless your family during this difficult time.

09/11/2002 -

Monica Dahlhausen

I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Mike several years back. He was a wonderful person and impressed me as "real people." Though it has been some time since I worked with him, he always had a greeting when I saw him in the hall. He will be missed. I am sorry about his death. Please accept my condolences.

09/11/2002 -

Melinda Mel Garza

I worked at USAA from 1984-1997 in the Public Affairs department and knew Mike. I always thought of him as a very nice, friendly, honest, and unpretentious guy. I was saddened to learn of his passing and extend my deepest sympathy to his family.

09/11/2002 -

Ed Reaves

We are all diminished by Michael's absence. I am very happy to have known Michael, who was the finest gentleman anyone could have the pleasure of working with. Michael always had time for an encouraging word and a smile for all of us, and had a gift for making each of us feel special. He will be greatly missed. God bless and sustain his family in this time of grief.

Michele Bosse

Pam, Matthew and Michael, I am so saddened by your sudden loss. May you find comfort in knowing he is in a better place and he’ll always remain in our hearts. I was one of the many blessed with the honor and pleasure of working with your husband and father. I remember being asked why I always called him Mr. Wagner instead of Mike, and my reply was simply because I had such great respect for him. He was a kind soul to all and a stranger to none. And what an impressive man he was – who else could be bitten by a rattlesnake, apply his own tourniquet, and drive himself to the hospital! We’ll remember him fondly. God bless you and your extended family. With sympathy and love,

09/11/2002 -

Laura Kelly

To Mike's Family, I've known Mike for over a decade and he's helped me in so many ways. Mike was always willing to take a moment, even when he didn't have one, and stop, listen and help. In the community, in work, in friendships, he was a model citizen. Our prayers extend to you and your family for comfort in the times ahead. May God grant all of you the best of memories to lighten the load. Mike will be someone we all remember--he touched all of us in such a positive way.

09/11/2002 -

Pam, we are sincerely sorry for your loss. For Bob personally, it is a sad shock also, because Mike was a good friend for many years. Our prayers are with you and your sons.

09/11/2002 -

Mike was one of the first men I met when I joined USAA nearly ten years ago. He was always a true gentleman and example for us all. We are less because of his passing but more because of his presence. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Semper Fidelis, Tom Draude

Scott Bowling

Dear Pam, Matt and Mike, There really are no words that I can write that will adequately express my sorrow over Mike's truly untimely departure. I have worked with him for over 15 years and I will sorely miss his wit, wisdom and kindness. Please accept my sincere condolences at this trying time. Sincerely, Scott Bowling

Roxie Baird

Ms. Wagner - I had the pleasure of working with Mike over the past couple of years due to my position in the Tax Planning Department. He was always a pleasure to work with and such a good man. Not only was he someone to respect, but he always respected others and treated each person with kindness. He knew how to make everyone around him feel important and that will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your sons.

09/11/2002 -

Sid Lifschultz

Dear Mrs. Wagner I did not have the opportunity to work directly with Mike but somehow or other he knew me by name and would say, "Hi Sid" each time we passed in the hall. We will miss his wonderful spirit. Our prayers are with you and with your family.

09/11/2002 -

Norman Grimmett

I have been fortunate to have known Mike for the past 19 years. I have never met a better man. Mike was a very personable individual, always having a friendly smile and greeting. I have always visualized Mike as being in tip top shape. I can recall back in the early 80's when he ran and completed the New York Marathon. I have admired him for that and have always wanted to do it myself. Being a runner myself, Mike and I shared a lot of running stories. I will definitely miss him.

09/11/2002 -

Bob Hayden

Mike was a wonderful friend and supporter almost from the first moment I arrived at USAA 20 years ago. He shepherded me through many contract issues over the years and was always a great source of rational wisdom. It was also fun to keep up with his exploits canoeing to the coast and living through snake bites. USAA and I will miss him very much!

09/11/2002 -

Chip Johnson

Mrs. Wagner and family, I had only one opportunity to work directly with Mike. That was about six years ago. From that time on, he always spoke to me by name and had a great smile and positive word whenever our paths crossed. He was the definitive gentleman. May the Great Comforter be with you and your family in this time of tremendous loss. Sincerely, Chip Johnson IMCO Compliance Auditor

09/11/2002 -

Juereta Smith

May your memories of this wonderful man sustain you at this time. Mike lived the life of goodness and kindness and will be sorely missed.

09/11/2002 -

Roland Edmiston

Dear Pam, and all of Mike's loved ones, I arrived at USAA over a quarter-century after Mike, but I worked with him a great deal during the past few years. Mike was one of the best and kindest men I've ever known when it comes to... well, I - like anyone else who was privileged enough to know him - could complete that sentence at least ten different ways. So perhaps it is enough to say that Mike Wagner was simply one of the best men I've ever known, period. I often looked to him for guidance, and just looked up to him in general. I miss Mike already, and know we all will continue to miss him for longer than we can imagine. My family and I would like to express our deepest sympathy to you and yours for your loss.

09/11/2002 -

Howard Monroe

Mrs. Wagner, I knew Mike because his locker in USAA E-fitness Center was close to mine. I saw him often as we prepared for our individual workouts. Sometimes we chatted casually. He was always nice, quick with a smile, and said hi to me by my first name. He was always a pleasure to be around. The first time I met him about 14 years ago was on a professional level. He immediately put me at ease and awed me with his expertise. He remembered my name from then on. I considered him a friend and coworker. My prayers are with you and your family. God bless you.

09/11/2002 -

James and Susan Demchak

Dear Pam, Mathew and Michael: Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time of sorrow. We have known Mike since 1984 and share in your loss. Mike was truly a gentleman and a fine person. We will miss his kindness and gentle manner. God bless you.

09/11/2002 -

Cece Abel

Dear Pam and Boys, It was my honor and pleasure to know and work closely with Mike for about 11 years. How tradgic that he's been taken from you and from us! Mike was truly one of the good guys! He was a caring, compassionate, and FUN co-worker. Even in times of great stress, and there were many in the Chairman's office, Mike maintained his sense of humor and concern for the "worker bees". T.S. Eliot said, "Grief is like the sky, it covers everything." For a time, that will be so. Our prayer for you is that eventually, you'll be able to remember Mike with more smiles than tears and that God will soon bring peace to you heart. We will continue to pray for your family. He will be missed! Cece Abel, formerly in the USAA Chairman's Office and Tony Abel, formerly USAA Corporate Communications

09/11/2002 -

Cindy Houston

I am so sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of meeting Mike while working at USAA IMCO as a secretary. He was one of the nicest, most down to earth men I have ever met. He treated every one with the same respect. I am truly saddened that such a nice human being has been taken entirely too early from this earth.

09/11/2002 -

Mark Soupiset

I am truly sorry for your tremendous loss. Mike was truly one of the "good guys" here at USAA. Always upbeat, always seeming to offer solutions to problems and very optimistic. Sincerely, Mark Soupiset Sr. Writer, USAA Member Communications

Gayna A. Dupont

I had the privilege to have worked with Mike here at USAA on selected projects, and extend my deepest sympathy in this sorrowful time. Mike will be remembered as a decent, honest and ethical man who never behaved as though he were any higher in authority or position than the lowest level employee here at USAA, although he stood as one of the finest people here. We all respected him greatly. He will be deeply missed by so many people. May God grant you comfort in knowing that there are so many who cared deeply for him and share your sorrow at his death.

I knew Mike for over fourteen years. He was very quick to put people at ease and always went out of his way to say hi when he passed you in the hall. I'll never forget when he was bitten by a rattlesnake in the early '90's while hunting in South Texas. Some co-workers chipped in and bought him a "I Survived the Rattler" t-shirt from Fiesta Texas. I will miss seeing him here at USAA.

09/11/2002 -

Norma L. Wardlow

My sincere condolences to you. My prayers are with you. Mike was a wonderful co-worker and I am going to miss him.

Rick and Carol Fowler

Words seem so inadequate to convey our deep sense of loss of this great man. Fourteen years ago, we had the privilege of meeting Mike and beginning a treasured friendship with this extraordinary colleague. More than any other person we know, he lived his life in a way that exemplified goodness. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family who may take some comfort that Mike's life made a difference for so many people and that he is still a role model for so many of us.

09/11/2002 -

Linda Fey

Pam, Matthew and Mikey - When I started at USAA 25 years ago your husband and father was almost one of the first people that I had the pleasure of working with. I thought then as I do now, "what a kind, polite, courteous and gentle man he is". We have remained friends all these years and I feel so sad that he is now gone - but just remember one thing...he was an angel here on earth, can you imagine the place he must hold in heaven now! Howard and Linda Fey

09/11/2002 -

Sally Grant

Please know that your friends at USAA are praying for you during these difficult times. I had the pleasure of working with Mike over the last ten years, and will miss him very much. He was thoughtful, cheerful, and competent, qualities admired by all, but totally possessed by very few.

09/11/2002 -

Von Shows

Please accept my deepest sympathy to all of Mr. Wagner's family. I had the distinct pleasure of working many contracts with him over the past 4 years. He always had a smile and warm character about him that had a calming effect on me as well as others. My fondest memory of him was when he was on vacation at Rockport and he took the time out to call into a conference call while he was sitting on the end of a pier fishing.I think it was at Key Allegro I sure admired him for that and not to mention I think he had caught some redfish too. He will be sorely missed here at USAA. May God watch over your family as I am sure Mike will. God bless you.

09/11/2002 -

chris mandel

I've only been at USAA for 1 1/2 yrs, but have know Mike pretty much from day 1. He stood out as uniquely friendly, supportive and just the nicest of guys. I will miss him greatly and grieve with you for your loss. Chris Mandel AVP, Enterprise Risk Mgt USAA

Mike was a voice of reason in what was often a sea of turmoil. Calmly, patiently, thoroughly, he was always able to put complicated issues into perspective and, most importantly, give them a human face. No matter how busy he was, Mike took the time to say hello and ask you how you were doing. At that moment, you knew you were the most important person in his life; he always gave you his complete -- and sincere -- attention. He was a truly decent and caring person. The world was a far better place for having Mike Wagner, and his absence will be felt all the more because of the depth of his character and the breadth of his kindness.

09/11/2002 -

Barbara & Stephanie Birgel

Dear Pam, Matt & Mikey, Please know that your San Antonio Academy "family" fondly remembers you and Mike. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

To the Wagner Family, I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Mike for several years. While Mike certainly had the knowledge, title and status worthy of his position, he was always a down to earth, kind person. My prayers are with your family in this time of grief, but do not lose hope. "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

To the Family, I was saddened to hear of the death of Mike. I have had the pleasure of working periodically with Mike at USAA for many years now. I did not know Mike real well. However, he was always a pleasure to work with and I really enjoyed his professionalism and great personality. He will be missed by all that knew him.

I was speechless at the news, but immediately knew I must convey certain sentiments, in writing, about a man who touched the lives of so many here in so many ways. If I had one word to sum up the Mike Wagner I knew, it would be, "Grace." Despite everything you hear about the dog-eat-dog world of Corporate America, your husband, your father, your brother, your uncle, your friend never exhibited guile or lack of kindness. I would call him every two weeks or so to talk about the latest USAA vendor who wanted to essentially trade on the USAA name, something we cautiously backed away from allowing a couple of years ago. He was always gracious, always returned calls promptly or even stopped by if he was in the area. On other, more complicated matters, he always had time to discuss them in great detail, even to share a laugh. To me, he was first a gentle man, then a USAA colleague, then a USAA lawyer. People underestimate the value of this other word used immediately to describe Mike when we heard the news yesterday: "Nice." This world doesn't have enough people for whom that label would work, but Mike Wagner embodied the rare combination of nice, smart and giving, yet successful. He seemed secure in who he was and saw value in everyone with whom he dealt -- no matter their education level, title, or "station." Case-in-point: The woman at the cafeteria checkout yesterday was talking about Mike. All of which is to say, he lived his faith. To be sure, the world lost an incredible man Monday night, but as others have said, Heaven gained an angel. And his influence lingers. Each of us in my new unit, Loss Prevention & Industry Analysis, said he has inspired us to be better human beings, no matter the demands on our lives. "Inspired" is a word that when deconstructed implies "to be instilled with spirit." We would all grow from demonstrating the kind of spirit Mike Wagner did. In short, his was a 54-year life well-lived. Your family is blessed to have is legacy. May God bless you in your time of sorrow.

I met Mike 20 years ago when I was a new employee. He always greeted people by name, and with a smile, regardless of their position in the company. He was a wonderful role model for us, and a genuinely great person who will be missed by all. May God give you strength and His blessings in this time of sorrow.

Pam, Matthew and Michael, Just a note during this very sad time to let you know that your dear husband and father was such a very special person--so personable and friendly to every single person he meet. He would always take the time to smile and say hello no matter who your were or what pressing matters may have been on his agenda. He is a magnificent soul that has returned to his home in heaven where I know he will continue to express his love for you and look out for you. God bless you all. Geri Reid

I had the honor of working with Mike on two projects at USAA over the past two years. He was a professional, caring and gentle man. He always had kind and supportive words for me and my teammates whether in writing, in the hall or in meetings. Mike was a natural leader who walked the talk. Part of him will continue to walk with me.

Mike was a very special man with a gentle spirit and kind heart. He has been one of the most respected senior officers at USAA. His position in the company may someday be filled, but no one will ever take his place in the hearts of so many.

The Lord didn't make a man nicer and kinder than Mike Wagner. He will be missed as a great lawyer, but remembered as a good man. God knows why He calls the good ones early.

Pam - I think of you and know you and your sons will miss Mike so much. I wish you the strength to carry on as a family, and I know you will help each other through this. I, along with so many people at USAA, thought the world of Mike, and will also miss him, but most of all, I am simply glad to have had the opportunity to know and work with him as much as I did. I know I will think of him every time it rains, because it seemed like almost every time we drove to Austin, it rained on us! I am also glad I got to know you a little bit, and happy that you and Mike joined the Tax Planning team on the Riverwalk last year for the Holidays. That is a very good memory! Love, Amy Cannefax

I've worked with Mike only for the last few years. He was truly a man who cared about others. He made an effort to learn and remember the name of everyone he met -- something not many people do. This type of caring and respect for others, no matter what their position, is certainly an outward sign of Mike's faith. May God bless you always and give you strength and comfort during this very difficult time.

Mrs. Wagner & Family, Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. I worked for USAA for 19 1/2 years and I never met a nicer man than Mr. Wagner. He always had the time to stop and talk with you and he was one of the few executives who had an open door policy. If he was in his office and you needed something, he would invite you in and take care of it right away. He truly was one of the nice guys and he will be missed by everyone he ever came in contact with. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

To the Wagner family: I only knew Mike at work USAA IMCO Securities Counsel & Compliance but found him to be one of the nicest, friendliest and truly one of the most caring persons I have ever worked with. He seemed to live each day as if it was his last. He was always there with a smile, a "hello" and asked how I was doing. He did this with everybody no matter what position in the company you held. He made you feel special. We need more "Mikes" in this world. You are truly blessed to have had such a husband, father and friend. He will be greatly missed here at USAA. May God comfort you in your loss.

Pam, Matthew and Mikey, For 26 years, Mike has been a mentor, friend and "big brother" to me. I have never known a greater gentleman, none more loving and caring. Matthew said it best last night; Mike loved us all, he never thought of himself, only of others. Like all who were fortunate enough to have known him, I will miss him dearly, but I will never forget him and the many ways he has affected my life. May the Love of God see you through this time of loss. Naomi and I will hold you in our prayers.

Dear Pam, Matthew, and Michael, Sandy, Linden, and I, and the rest of our family are so saddened by Mike's death. Mike and I went to law school together; Mike two classes ahead of me. If fact, as Mike was graduating, he recruited me to fill his USAA law clerk position when he accepted permanent employment in the general counsel's office. I was gradified that he thought enough of me to seek me out. It was a great job too. I grew from the experience. Sandy, Linden, and I remember our parallel years at the SA Academy, when Matthew and Linden were there in school together. Matthew played Orphlia you were pretty cute too, Matt to Linden's Hamlet. Those were good years and it was good to see Mike and all of you at school functions and the like. My dad died when I was a freshman in college. I remember the telephone call and a lonely flight home. I think of my dad just about every day and feel more affection toward him now than ever before. Matthew, Michael, you are lucky to have had such a fine father. You can see his goodness in the two of you. You've got a wonderful mom and family, and I know you will take care of one another. The East family will miss Mike Wagner and are very sorry for your loss. Your friends, Myron East & Family

Dear Pam, Mathew, and Michael, On behalf of Goldman, Sachs & Co., I would like offer our deepest sympathies to you and your entire family for the passing of Mike. Many of us at Goldman Sachs had the opportunity to work with Mike over the past six years on some of the most innovative insurance financings ever created. We were always impressed with Mike's intellect, integrity, creativity, and commitment. More so, however, Mike touched many of us with his friendliness and ability to maintain perspective. He never took himself or what we were all doing too seriously. He took a personal interest in the people working for him, not just in the business matters at hand. In this way, Mike taught all of us valuable lessons that we will have with us always. We will miss him deeply. Our hearts go out to you even more so for your loss. Sincerely, Andrew Kaiser Managing Director Goldman, Sachs & Co.

To the Wagner family, I met Mike when I began working at USAA in 1976, and I clearly recall that his personable nature, professionalism, intelligence and positive attitude made him a very special person. Even after our work together diverged and caused us to see one another much less frequently, he was always genuinely interested in how I was doing, both personally and on the job. Mike was my role model for 25 years. His very polite and gentlemanly demeanor, wisdom, calmness in difficult circumstances, and willingness to share his time and talents with many worthy organizations that needed his help made him a wonderful person in my eyes. And, I shall always strive to be like him. I pray for all of Mike's extended family and friends so they may be strengthened at this time and comforted in knowing that Mike is now completely fulfilled by God's love and will be eternally happy.

Pam, Matt, and Mikey, I cannot adequately express the depth of grief that so many of us who were privileged to work with Mike feel at his passing. He was an incredibily talented and skilled professional, a gracious gentleman and fascinating conversationalist. He will be sorely missed. In my conversations with Mike about the Laurel Heights UMC youth mission trips my children, Andrew and Zoe, so enjoyed getting to know Matt and Mikey on these tripsMike's compassion for others and his desire for his children to continue to grow in love and compassion for others was always so evident. He was such a good person and loving father. He was also obviously very proud of his boys! May the love of family and friends and faith in God help you in this time of great loss. My family and I will hold you in our prayers. Alice Gannon

My sincere condolences to Pam and all of Mike's family. We worked together at USAA for many years in IMCO. Mike was among a rare and vanishing breed of "gracious gentlemen". Politeness, kindness, and caring were embedded in everything he did and towards everyone he came into contact with. He will be sorely missed. My sincerest sympathies go out to you, but please know that so many people will keep wonderful memories of Mike in their hearts. Sincerely, Jane

Cynthia Toles

Dear Pam and boys, Mike hired me 2 1/2 years ago, and it has been an honor and privilege to work under his leadership and guidance for even this brief time. I knew Mike through industry meetings long before joining USAA, and I can tell you he was widely-known and respected by his peers throughout the industry. Mike was the best boss anyone could hope for -- supportive, caring, fair and compassionate, even at those times he had to make and carry out the really tough decisions or deliver difficult news. Mike is irreplaceable for all of us -- he was a gentleman, an ambassador, a peacemaker, a protector, a hands-on problem resolver, an appellate court. He exemplified one of the traits I value most highly -- a humble spirit: Mike treated people at all levels and walks of life with the same degree of respect, and placed no one's intrinsic value beneath his own -- quite a feat for someone of his stature. We have all lost a giant and someone we hoped to count on, work with and enjoy for many years to come. I will miss the most his sparkling eyes, ready laugh, self-deprecating sense of humor, and the way he always tried to handle everything he could in person. For example, he would always try to return phone calls by making a trip to the caller's office! This white glove treatment was known throughout the company as "the Mike Wagner treatment." My heart goes out to the three of you, who will miss him and the daily joy of his presence the very most.

09/13/2002 -

Shelly Holm

I was very saddened by Mike's passing. I have been with USAA 18 years and when he worked with our Marketing group he was always so helpful and easy to work with. You would pass him in the hall and he would always call you by name. I was impressed by his professionalism, and his ability to be so down to earth. He will be missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

09/13/2002 -

To Pam & Family, I've known Mike over thirty years at USAA. I will miss his smiling face. He was someone to be admired. My heart aches for you. May you find comfort in knowing that Mike touched so many people.

Dear Pam~ I must tell you that Mike was a huge inspiration to me. I even told him once that I soooo wanted to be like him in business...always professional, nice, genuine, honest, and great to be with. He just laughed and shook his head...he was very humble. I really enjoyed working with Mike on the Res Re deal all over the world! and visiting with you at several parties. I will always miss and never forget Mike.

Mike was one of the greatest people I have met over my 26 year career at USAA. He always had a friendly smile and words to offer as he passed you in the hall. He was respectful of all people. If he had time he was alway anxious to share his latest hunting or fishing story. I know this must be a great loss for all of you as it is for all of us here at USAA. My prayers are with you during this time.

Mrs. Wagner, Matthew & Michael, My deepest sympathy on the death of your father and husband. He was a wonderful person and will be missed very much. I met Mr. Wagner when I was working on mahogany row as a Secretary for Col. George Ensley in the days of Gen. McDermott and Col. Ferrari. Those were the days of working with great men and it was a pleasure to have known Mr. Wagner. He was always very pleasant and always took the time to listen. I regret that as of last year I was laid-off from USAA and I did not get to say goodbye to Mr. Wagner. Friends from USAA told me of his death on Monday with regret. I just wanted you to know it was a pleasure working with him at USAA and a blessing to have met him. God bless you and your family always,

Pam, Matthew, and Michael, I am an attorney who had the opportunity to work with Mike on several lawsuits. Mike was a fine lawyer and an outstanding gentleman. My partners and I often remarked that Mike was the most gracious client that we had. Mike's family, When I worked at USAA, I wrote a lot of stories for the employee audience that required Mike's legal approval before they could be published. Mike being an SVP, I knew he had more important things to do than read my stories but he always treated them like priority. I heard through the grapevine that he passed---unfortunately I found out the day after his funeral. I would have liked to attend. Mike was so kind and geniunely nice, I'm sorry that he is no longer with us. He will be missed very much. I know he'll think about you every day and watch over you every day from heaven.
